A Closer Look: Exploring Manufacturing at Morse
A recent employer tour took our members to Morse in Canton, a leading manufacturer specializing in tools and cutting products. The visit provided a firsthand look at the world of manufacturing and its many career opportunities.
What Members Learned
Michael, a member of Project REBUILD, shared his excitement about the experience: “I thought the ways they made metals was the most interesting part. I also learned about automatic welding, which I didn’t know much about before.”
Another member noted: “Seeing how they engineer sharp edges on metal and learning about welding and engineering was really cool. I didn’t realize how many parts are involved in the process.”
For many members, the tour was an eye-opening experience. They were able to see the complexity of the manufacturing process and learn about roles they hadn’t previously considered, such as welding, machine operation, and engineering.
What Surprised Members the Most
Several members were struck by the scale and sophistication of the machinery used at Morse. Michael reflected, “What surprised me most was all the machines and how they work. They seem simple, but they’re actually very dangerous.”
This realization highlighted the importance of safety and precision in the industry, as well as the need for specialized training to operate such equipment.
Impact on Career Goals
The tour not only introduced members to new industries but also helped them see how their current training could lead to meaningful careers. For some, it sparked a deeper interest in pursuing paths they hadn’t previously considered.
One member shared, “The tour helped me see what’s out there and what’s possible. I could definitely see myself exploring a path like welding or engineering after seeing this.”
Building Confidence Through Connection
Career exploration is about more than just learning technical skills—it’s also about building confidence and developing the soft skills needed to succeed in the workplace. Employer tours give our members the opportunity to practice professional communication, ask thoughtful questions, and engage with industry leaders.
One member reflected, “Seeing people who love their jobs and hearing how they got there motivates me. It helps me see that I can get there too, step by step.”
These experiences also help members feel more comfortable in professional settings, which can be intimidating for those just starting their career journeys. By meeting professionals and learning about their career paths, members gain a better understanding of how to navigate the workforce and achieve their goals.
Career Exploration as a Bridge to Opportunity
At Project REBUILD, we see career exploration as a bridge between the training we provide and the opportunities waiting for our members in the workforce. Through activities like employer tours, we help them:
- Visualize their futures: Seeing real workplaces helps members imagine themselves in similar roles.
- Build actionable plans: Learning about skills, certifications, and career paths gives members a clear roadmap to follow.
- Feel empowered to succeed: Exposure to professionals and industries helps members believe in their potential and take ownership of their goals.
As one member reflected, “The tours help us understand the bigger picture—how our skills fit into real careers. They make everything we’re learning feel more connected to our future.”
The Role of Local Employers
Our employer tours wouldn’t be possible without the support of local businesses like Morse and so many others in Stark County. These organizations open their doors to our members, share their knowledge, and inspire the next generation of workers.
If you’re a local employer interested in partnering with Project REBUILD, we’d love to hear from you! By hosting a tour or sharing your expertise, you can play a vital role in shaping the futures of young people in our community.
