Several weeks ago, we had the opportunity to gather with community partners, supporters, and friends to celebrate 25-plus years of Project REBUILD and YouthBuild Greater Stark County. Our annual Community Breakfast was a time to reflect on our journey, celebrate our members, and look toward the future.
As the morning unfolded, the energy in the room was a mix of excitement, nervousness, and hope. For many of our members, it was a chance to step into new spaces, meet new people, and hear powerful stories of resilience and leadership — including an unforgettable keynote from John Valverde, CEO of YouthBuild Global.
Building Connections
Sitting at tables with community leaders, business professionals, and longtime supporters, our members found themselves engaged in conversations they might not have imagined having just a few months ago.
Akeim enjoyed the meaningful conversations he shared with Sarge, his wife, and mother, appreciating the genuine communication and the stories they exchanged about life, work, and travel. Similarly, Ren found encouragement in heartfelt conversations with two community leaders at their table, who listened closely to their goals and praised their effort and growth.
Others, like Blue, connected deeply with representatives from Habitat for Humanity, learning about the important work they do in the community and discussing how service projects transform both volunteers and neighborhoods. Blue’s conversation highlighted the real-world impact of nonprofit partnerships — and sparked excitement about future collaborations.
Learning Through Stories
Throughout the breakfast, it became clear that the real power of the morning was in the stories being shared — not just from the podium, but around every table.
John Valverde’s keynote resonated deeply with our members. His journey, from unimaginable hardship to leading a global movement, showed that mistakes do not define the future — and that redemption, growth, and leadership are always possible.
Marquies felt the weight of John’s words, especially when he spoke about personal loss, accountability, and healing. Hannah reflected on how John’s story reminded her that with determination, no dream is out of reach. And for Jorden, the message was clear: even when life feels impossible, faith and perseverance can carve a new path.
Across the room, members saw themselves reflected in John’s honesty and resilience — a living example that no obstacle is too big to overcome.
Pushing Through the Nerves
Not every moment came easily. For some, the day started with nerves. Sitting in a large room, surrounded by unfamiliar faces, was intimidating at first.
Ren admitted feeling nervous until the conversation pulled him in and he found a rhythm. Michael shared a similar experience, noticing how quickly strangers became approachable once conversations began. Hannah took inspiration from watching Executive Director Joanna James speak courageously in front of the crowd — a reminder that bravery often means stepping out of your comfort zone, no matter how long you’ve been at it.
Gratitude and Growth
As the morning came to a close, there was an overwhelming sense of gratitude — for the support of the community, for the friendships made, and for the reminder that Project REBUILD is part of something much bigger than any one person or story.
Ja’Mez noted how powerful it was to see so many people believing in the mission of Project REBUILD. Estrella found encouragement in meeting new allies and supporters who truly cared about her future.
Members like Naomi reflected on the surprising similarities between people from very different walks of life, while others like Jaxon and Cameron appreciated learning about industries and career paths they might not have otherwise encountered.
Final Reflections
The 2025 Community Breakfast wasn’t just an event — it was a moment of growth. It reminded us that the connections we make, the stories we tell, and the courage we summon, matter.
Our members showed up — even when they felt nervous, or the early morning felt too early. They met new people, heard new perspectives, and left with new confidence.
Events like this remind us why Project REBUILD exists — to walk alongside young people as they discover that they are stronger, more capable, and more deserving than they may have ever believed.
Thank you to every member, supporter, and guest who made the day possible. Here’s to the next 25 years — and to all the bright futures we’re building, one conversation at a time.
