The past several weeks have brought about feelings of uneasiness, fear, and uncertainty. As staff at Project REBUILD, we have spent time ensuring that we continue to operate in compliance, work as efficiently as possible, and have contingency plans in place. But beyond the logistics and planning, this time has also given us something unexpected—the opportunity to reflect on what brought us here and why we continue to do this work.
At times, the weight of responsibility feels heavy. We’ve seen leadership navigate challenges that seemed effortless from the outside, only to learn that behind the scenes, there were always questions, anxieties, and the quiet thought of what comes next? In truth, those same questions and uncertainties have filled our minds lately. But as we’ve taken a step back from the chaos, we’ve realized something important—we are not feeling anything different than the young adults we serve.
A Shared Experience
Many of our members come to us from situations of instability and uncertainty. They know what it feels like to live in survival mode, unsure of what the next day holds or how they’ll navigate the road ahead. They come to Project REBUILD seeking structure, opportunity, and guidance. And as staff, it is our job to walk alongside them, offering support, encouragement, and accountability.
But in these recent weeks, we’ve felt that same uncertainty. We’ve experienced moments of doubt and fear about what’s to come. And in those moments, we’ve been reminded of the very thing we tell our members: uncertainty is not the end of the road—it is a challenge to rise above.
This realization has grounded us and brought us back to one essential thing: our why.
Remembering Our Why
At Project REBUILD, we do this work because we believe in the untapped potential of young people. Because we know that love plus accountability creates space for growth. Because we have seen firsthand that when given the right tools and support, our members can thrive.
Our “why” isn’t about avoiding challenges—it’s about facing them head-on. It’s about showing up for our members the way we ask them to show up for themselves. It’s about recognizing that, even in difficult seasons, there are always reasons to keep moving forward.
We see that same resilience in our members every single day. The ones who wake up and choose to keep pushing toward their diploma. The ones who step into uncomfortable situations to learn new skills. The ones who take on leadership roles, even when self-doubt creeps in.
They remind us of what’s possible when we keep moving forward—together.
Finding the Blessings in Challenge
The past several weeks have been tough, but they have also given us unexpected blessings:
- Stronger Connections – We’ve had meaningful conversations with colleagues from across the country—connections that may not have happened otherwise. In moments of uncertainty, the power of community has never been more evident.
- A Renewed Perspective – We’ve realized that the emotions we’ve felt mirror those of our members. This reminder has deepened our empathy and commitment to walking alongside them in their journeys.
- Time to Reflect and Refocus – This pause has allowed us to step back, reassess, and recommit to getting better—both as individuals and as an organization—so we can continue providing the best support possible.
Moving Forward with Purpose
The truth is, uncertainty will always be part of life. Change is inevitable. But just as we encourage our members to develop resilience, build confidence, and move forward despite fear, we as staff must do the same.
We will continue to support them, ensuring they know they are not alone in their struggles. We will remain committed to growth, not just for ourselves, but for the young adults who look to us for guidance. And we will face whatever comes next—just as we always have—with courage, adaptability, and the unwavering belief that we will make it through.
Because in the end, that’s what we want for our members. And that’s why we’re here.
