In October, we had the incredible opportunity to travel to Burlington, Vermont, as part of a Service Learning Exchange through YouthBuild AmeriCorps. It was a journey filled with firsts, service, and unforgettable experiences with other YouthBuild programs.
Day One: New Experiences and Exploring Burlington
For many of our members, this was their first time flying or even leaving the state. The excitement was high as we navigated the airport and landed in Burlington. Once there, we quickly settled in and headed to the local favorite, Al’s French Frys, for lunch. Afterward, we explored Waterfront Park and Battery Park, where we watched the sunset over Lake Champlain—a perfect introduction to the natural beauty of Vermont. The day ended with a group dinner, setting the tone for the days to come.
Day Two: Service at Hubbard Park and Connections
The next morning, we traveled to Montpelier, Vermont’s capital, to help clean up Hubbard Park after the Enchanted Forest Festival. This park, managed by just six employees, spans over 200 acres. Alongside 45 YouthBuild members and staff from YouthBuild Barre and YouthBuild Burlington, we collected pumpkins, tiki torches, and candles used in the festival, giving the park a full cleanup.
After a fulfilling morning of service, we visited the State Capitol, where we took a group photo and shared in a friendly game of tug of war with YouthBuild Barre. The evening back in Burlington was spent enjoying dinner on the beach, watching the sunset, and reflecting on our shared work and friendships.
Day Three: Teamwork and Restoration at Camp Abnaki
On our final day, we teamed up with YouthBuild Burlington at Camp Abnaki to help restore some of the camp’s buildings. Working together, we repaired a boathouse, a bathhouse, and a shed tucked away in a “secret spot,” all against the stunning backdrop of Lake Champlain and Vermont’s vibrant fall colors.
After a final lunch and a spirited game of knockout, we made our way back to the airport, reflecting on our experience. This exchange reminded us of the unique, shared culture within the YouthBuild network and the incredible impact that small acts of service can make.
Bringing It All Home
Our time in Vermont left us inspired by the dedication of YouthBuild programs everywhere, knowing we’re part of something larger. We returned with lasting memories, new perspectives, and a renewed commitment to making a difference in our own community.
Thank you, YouthBuild Burlington, for sharing your beautiful state and giving us an experience we’ll never forget. And a big thanks to AmeriCorps for making it all possible!
